We all have our go-to favourite foods that make up the majority of meals, maybe you love peanut butter on toast in the morning, or perhaps creamy pesto pasta for dinner. Enjoying life and enjoying our favourite foods is so important. But what if we could make some simple food swaps to enjoy a healthier diet and more balanced lifestyle?
We’ve put together a list of our favourite healthy swaps which can easily replace your regular ingredients and help you to upgrade your health and happiness in 2019. Some might be a little surprising and not what you would usually prepare, but we’re confident you’re going to love them!
Sweeten with cinnamon
Instead of beginning your day with sugar in your tea or coffee, try using cinnamon instead. This natural sweetener is anti inflammatory, loaded with antioxidants and helps to lower blood sugar levels. You will still get a hit of sweetness in your morning cuppa, but without the sugar rush.
Make you own almond milk
At first glance this can seem overwhelming, but making your own almond milk is easier than you think. There are just three steps to creating homemade almond milk. 1, soak your almonds for 6-8 hours. 2, blend. 3, strain. In next to no time you have your very own delicious and nutritious almond milk.
Peanut butter powder
If you’re someone who loves their peanut butter, why not try using peanut powder. The peanuts are roasted and pressed to remove 85% of the fat and calories found in traditional peanut butter. Add the powder straight into your recipes and smoothies, or if you want a peanut butter spread, simply stir the powder with water in a bowl and you have your very own, very healthy peanut butter.
If you’re trying to include more plants into your diet, cauliflower will be your new staple ingredient! To make cauliflower rice, simply blend the cauliflower in a food processor until you achieve your desired texture. Once you add your extra ingredients and sauce you will struggle to notice a difference between this and your regular rice.
TIP: You can even use cauliflower for cauliflower mash, hash-browns, gnocchi- whatever your heart desires!
Snack on frozen grapes
The perfect snack for a hot summers day and the perfect snack for someone who usually reaches for an ice block or has a sweet tooth. Use freezer bags to freeze your grapes so whenever you need a summer snack you have bite-sized snacks with no added sugar ready and waiting.
Apple slices instead of crackers
We know that your usual cheese platter would feature your favourite crackers, but why not try apple slices instead of crackers. Layering your dips and cheese onto apple slices is surprisingly delicious. Or if that doesn’t appeal to you, layer your apple slices with cream cheese or peanut butter.
Rolled oats instead of breadcrumbs
Not your typical breadcrumb, rolled oats can be blended or put in a food processor to achieve a crumb-like texture. Full of fibre and packed with nutrients like B vitamins and iron, rolled oats are a low-GI carbohydrate and awesome alternative to regular breadcrumbs. TIP: rolled oats lack flavour so add in extra herbs and seasoning to your recipe.
Baked zucchini or carrot chips
Although we love our potatoes (the best and most versatile food ever!) these chips are perfect if you are craving something less heavy. All you need is some olive oil and some spices to season to whip up these very delicious, and very healthy, veggie chips.
