Skin is the largest organ of the human body accounting for 12 – 16% of body weight. It consists of 70% water, 25.5% protein along with lipids and various minerals.

The skin is comprised of three layers, an outer layer (epidermis), inner layer (dermis) and a deeper third layer (sub cutis). It is in the deep third layer where new cells grow and push upward toward the skin surface.

The dermis consists of a dense meshwork of two large proteins; collagen and elastin, which together are responsible for skin elasticity, tone and texture. Their large size makes absorption of these two molecules through the surface of the skin difficult. It is therefore from the inside that collagen and elastin are involved with the regeneration of skin.

Ageing of the skin begins at around 25 years as the natural regeneration process slows. Thinning of the skin begins at about 45 years due in part to hormonal changes and continues to be exacerbated by exposure to UV light and environmental pollutants. Nutritional and other lifestyle factors also play a role.

The process of thinning makes skin more vulnerable to damage as the collagen coils and elastin suffer cuts and cross-linking damage resulting in skin strength loss.  Additionally, GAG levels decrease, resulting in progressively dryer and looser skin. The breakdown of elastin causes wrinkles. By the age of 60, collagen levels in skin are at extreme lows.
