It seems the more we learn about health and nutrition the more complicated it can become. In today’s society, we are all encouraged to avoid carbs, dairy, gluten- the list goes on- but what do our bodies actually want and need?

It is easy to get caught up in the latest health trends with trying to eat ‘right’ that we often stop eating in a way that is right for us. Though many health and nutrition principals are universal, health is very much subjective to an individual. Just because some people think grains or dairy should be avoided at all costs, does not mean you need to avoid them too.

There is no right and wrong when it comes to the concept of listening to your body, so how do we recognise the signs if we are not yet in tune with our bodies signals?

Our number one tip is to identify how you feel after you eat, simple but effective. Do you feel energised? Tired? Bloated? Gassy? Pay particular attention to how certain foods and food groups make you feel as these could be symptoms of food intolerances.

Food intolerances are your body’s way of telling you something isn’t quite right. It is important to not ignore the warning signs and start reading into them. Intolerances you may have heard of include gluten intolerances which is a protein found in wheat barley and rye that many people cannot ingest.  You may also have heard of lactose intolerances which are the natural sugars found in milk and other dairy products. There are countless alternatives out in the market today to cater for these food intolerances from gluten-free pastas, paleo bread and plant-based milks, but what are the health benefits of these alternatives and is it right for you?

Today, we are going to focus on plant-based milks as an alternative to dairy.  There is every flavour under the sun when it comes to plant-based milks including almond, cashew, coconut, hemp, rice (just to name a few) but they all seem to be a popular alternative for those with and without food intolerances.

So why should you choose plant-based milk? Plant-based milks are not only cruelty free, but they also come with additional benefits that make them an amazing house hold staple and alternative. They are high in calcium, low in calories and fat, and are easier for our bodies to digest, when compared to cows milk. It is, however, important to purchase plant-based milks that at are free from sugars and nasty additives.
