Pregnancy and Vida Glow

One of the most common questions we receive is whether Vida Glow marine collagen is safe whilst trying to conceive, at pregnancy, and when breastfeeding.

Our marine collagen blends are completely safe whilst trying to conceive. Especially, if you have already been supplementing your diet with Vida Glow.

Marine collagen is generally not recommended whilst pregnant. So if you are taking Vida Glow and find out you’re pregnant, simply stop taking the supplement and save any unused product for when your baby is born. Don’t worry, taking Vida Glow marine collagen in the early weeks of pregnancy will not harm your little one.

Eating Snapper when pregnant is safe and actually recommended, and Vida Glow marine collagen is derived from the scales of ocean fish. The reason why marine collagen is not recommended during pregnancy is because of the possible side effect of a hyper sensitivity reaction.

There are four possible side effects of taking Marine Collagen:

  1. Gastrointestinal upset – this occurs when 10 grams or more is being consumed daily, which we do not recommend. The highest recommended dosage of Vida Glow is 9 grams.
  2. A lingering after taste or smell for approximately 30 minutes after consumption. If you experience this we would recommend stirring Vida Glow into a juice, shake or smoothie, and avoiding it in plain water.
  3. Hypersensitivity reactions can result as a side effect of taking marine collagen supplements. Hypersensitivity reactions happen as an abnormal response of the immune system against allergens, such as food, drugs and supplements. Collagen supplements that come from ocean fish or other marine sources may cause an allergic reaction, usually in the form of a skin rash. Please note that this is not serious, unless you have an allergy to fish, and usually subsides once you stop consuming the supplement.
  4. Decreased appetite.

It is suggested that pregnant women eat 2 – 3 servings of fish every week for the good health of themselves and their developing baby. However, pregnant women or women intending to become pregnant within the next six months should be careful about which fish they eat. Some types of fish contain high levels of mercury, which can be harmful to the developing fetus. Fish with high levels are mercury are the species which have a long lifespan, for example, Swordfish, Marlin, Orange Roughy, Ling and Shark.

Whereas, Salmon, Snapper, Barramundi, Mackerel, Tuna and Salmon are safe with very low levels of mercury. Women should not be worried if they’ve had the odd meal of fish with high levels of mercury. It is only a potential problem when that type of fish is eaten regularly, which causes a build-up of mercury in the mother’s blood.

All of Vida Glow’s marine collagen blends are tested by a NATA accredited laboratory in Sydney Australia, with tests confirming that our marine collagen blends are 100% safe for human consumption, and is free from toxins, heavy metals including mercury and pollution.
