Easy Exercises to Keep You Fit While on Holidays

Move, look and feel better with pilates!

To continue our month of Fit Feb, we caught up with our beautiful friend Tori, Founder of Peaches Pilates – our go-to pilates studio in Sydney. Peaches also have a great online program you can do from anywhere in the world.

We spoke to Tori about what an active lifestyle means to her, and how she makes a conscious effort to keep active with her mind, body & soul everyday.

Currently travelling the world on the trip of a lifetime with her husband, we asked her to share her top 3 exercises she can do from her hotel room, as well as her favourite healthy smoothie she has before a day of exploring! Watch below for her favourite exercises, healthy smoothie recipe and top tips for keeping active this #FITFEB.

Once we started chatting to Tori, we couldn’t get enough of her positive energy and love for health & fitness, so we thought we would ask her a few more questions…

What sparked your interest in opening a pilates studio?

I have always done Pilates – it’s something that I used to do with my mother, growing up in Cairns – and the one form of exercise I have been consistent with my whole life – it just works! Pilates saved my life after I suffered a terrible L5 disc injury in a poorly managed gym class – that’s when I realised how much the practice can have a positive impact on your life. I got my certification purely for the love of it – planning on it being more of a hobby – before I knew it, I was teaching before and after work, in the MTV offices during lunch, and any other opportunity I got – things snowballed and I realised I loved helping people – Peaches was born, and the rest is history!

What does an active lifestyle mean to you? e.g. mind, body, soul

I love looking at health from a holistic viewpoint – being active isn’t smashing yourself in the gym for an hour then sitting at a desk for 8 more afterwards. I love incorporating movement in my everyday life – be it exploring new destinations during our travels, or having a ‘walking meeting’ with my business partner Bec when I am at home in Sydney. I exercise because it makes me feel GOOD. With age, I have found so much of my wellness routine is based on health from a mental and spiritual standpoint – not so much the physical any more. Sure – when you workout your body changes, and feeling confident in your own skin is one hell of a confidence boost – but what’s even better is finding a way to love yourself; fostering your health and wellness by doing things that make you feel good – not to punish yourself.

What does a typical day look like for you?

At the moment, I am on the tail end of an 8 month working trip with my husband – so the average day is pretty cool! When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is check in with the Peachy World – nothing excites me more than seeing what has gone on with our community while I have slept. We have coffee – complete with a serving of marine collagen – and spend 3-5 hours working. While I’m away, ‘work’ consists of running the business from a PR perspective, managing staff, and arranging collaborations as well as creating events, retreats and exciting projects for the year ahead. Once we feel on top of things – it’s time to explore! I am currently in Tokyo, so today the plan is to roam the streets of Harajuku, eat until my heart’s content (the Japanese are food obsessed and there are vendors EVERYWHERE) – before dipping our toes into the wild world of the Golden Gai alley tonight!

If you weren’t working at Peaches, what do you think you would be doing?

I’d either still be in the writing world (I was formerly the editor of MTV Travel) – eating, travelling and writing about it – or I’d be a midwife! I am hugely passionate about women’s health, birth and babies, and have found a way to incorporate this side of myself as a Doula – which fits in beautifully with Peaches.

How do you keep active while travelling?

Our online program has seriously saved my husband and I on this trip. The pack is lightweight and sits on the top of my suitcase, and we’ve been able to get a sweat on in the most amazing places – the deck of a boat in Croatia, on the sands of a Maldivian beach, and even in the Jordanian desert to name a few! In addition to this, we walk as much as possible, take the opportunity to do weights whenever we can (hotel gyms etc) or ride bikes to explore each new city. I have just finished a two month stint in Tulum, Mexico, where we purchased some cheap bikes and rode everywhere!

What’s your favourite way to keep active?

It will always, always be Pilates. Resistance Pilates, to be specific. It just works, and you feel amazing. It’s the one form of exercise I have consistently done throughout my life, and my love for it just grows each year that goes by.

How do you ensure you are looking after your skin each day?

I am completely anal about my skincare. I never, ever go to bed with makeup on, and I wear SPF every day. I try to use as many natural products and oils as I can, and I am completely obsessed with marine collagen. Now that I’m 30, I am hoping to hold onto the fullness in my face – by working from the inside out – rather than injecting nasties!

What do you love about the benefits of Marine Collagen for your skin? D0 you have any other favourite skincare products?

I recommend it to nearly everyone I meet. It works! Before my wedding, I practically bathed in the stuff. Then besides collagen, which I am clearly passionate about, I love using oils and natural products! Wild Skincare has an amazing range of divine smelling oils which sink into your skin leaving it feeling velvety and like you’ve just stepped out of a spa. I also swear by using SPF – I’ve been wearing it every single day since I was a young teen, and I think this has made the world of difference for me.

What do you typically eat in a day?

I’m not one to follow any diet, but I eat a LOT of greens, and a LOT of carbs. Broccoli and spinach are on the daily agenda, but I try to not put too much pressure on myself to stick to any specific routine. I hate that the wellness industry has demonized so many food groups. Unless you have a legitimate, serious allergy – you don’t need to cut things out to be healthy. My motto is to simply eat real food. I aim to avoid overly processed items, as well as too much sugar, and that works for me. A life without pasta is just not worth living.

Would you share your favourite smoothie recipe with us?

In Tulum my husband Chris and I became smoothie obsessed! The hot weather was perfect for it. Our daily smoothie recipe was: banana, spinach, cucumber, strawberries, almond milk, flax seed, chia seeds – plus natural yoghurt when we could find one without too much sugar in the Mexican supermarkets – not always an easy feat.

How to fuel your workouts – do you have favourite pre and post-exercise snacks/meals?

Not really – again, my approach to food is pretty basic. I just try to eat good, wholesome, home cooked food as often as possible. I’m not one who believes in needing sickly sweet pre-workout powders, or eating a dry chicken breast after the gym. I see all meals as fuel – as well as an opportunity to feed my little gut bugs – I try to ensure that whatever I am putting in my mouth will also reach them – ie prebiotic items, as well as fibre rich meals.

What would be your top tips for someone just starting out with pilates?

Don’t knock it until you try it. I can’t tell you how many people have walked into the doors of Peaches and told me they thought Pilates was either too easy, or too clinical for them – until they tried our method! When done correctly, Pilates can help you in ways you won’t have imagined. Not only will you feel tight and toned, your posture will improve, your back pain will decrease and your mental health will flourish. The concentration element of the practice makes for an amazing reprive for the mind.
