How To Get Rid of Cellulite Naturally: The Top 5 Tips

Cellulite - most women have it, hate it and don't know what to do about it. Whilst cellulite isn't harmful or dangerous, it is something most us would like to get rid of! 

Cellulite is defined as "persistent subcutaneous fat causing dimpling of the skin, especially on women's hips and thighs". To put it simply, cellulite is nothing more than fat beneath the skin. It appears bumpy because the fat pushes against your body's connective tissue, causing the skin above it to dimple.

Cellulite is much more common in women than men (it affects over 90% of all women) due to differences in hormones and body fat storage areas, and is particularly visible on women’s thighs, buttock and legs.

There are many factors that influence the appearance of cellulite including your individual: 

  • Diet (food and water intake)
  • Exercise levels
  • Hormones
  • Connective tissue changes
  • Circulation
  • Total body fat (note that slim people can have cellulite too)
  • Skin colour and thickness (cellulite is less noticeable on darker skin)

  • Improve Your Circulation - Loss of circulation to an area of your body – whether it is due to a sluggish lymph system, inactivity, clogged arteries or nutrient deficiency – can greatly impact the formation of cellulite. So improving your body's circulation and lymph system can be one of the most effective ways to reduce visible cellulite.

Dry bodybrushing functions as a light form of massage that stimulates lymph flow. Try using a large, soft natural-bristle brush before you shower to gently stroke the surface of the skin on your thighs and buttocks. A few minutes each day can greatly improve your circulation and lymph system, reducing cellulite visibility. Body scrubs, especially those containing coffee, are also great for improving circulation. Foam rolling of the lower body can also help with blood flow and circulation.

  • Eat Healthy & Stay Hydrated - Healthy eating is very important when it comes to managing cellulite. Filling your day with fresh, nutritious foods including high amounts of fruits and veggies, and avoiding alcohol, refined foods and saturated fats is vital in the fight against cellulite. Ensuring you have a good intake of healthy fats (think fish, nuts, seeds, avocados) versus unhealthy fats (think processed, fatty meats, deep-fried foods, cakes, biscuits) is important too as the healthy fats will help your skin appear more full. Keeping hydrated by drinking lots of water can also help with circulation and preventing your skin from appearing dried out.
