Cleanse: Washing your face is a simple task, but the benefits of this simple action are innumerable. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests we cleanse our faces twice a day (and after sweating) using a gentle cleansing solution to remove bacteria, pollutants, excessive sebum, and dead skin cells that gather on our face everyday.
Lukewarm water is best used, as hot water can break capillaries and damage cells whilst cold water will not allow your pores to completely open. Apply the cleanser in small, upward circular motions starting from the bottom of the face working your way upward. When rinsing the cleanser, avoid being too aggressive with a towel as the skin on our face is much more sensitive than we think.
Exfoliate: Proper exfoliation removes the barrier of dead skin cells clogging the skin and uncovers fresh new cells below. This opens the way for moisturising products to penetrate more deeply into the skin, which makes them more effective.
Exfoliators generally have small, sand-like particles designed to gently rub into your skin, using circular motions, no more than 2 times a week. The goal is to have glowing and healthier looking skin – not red and irritated – so make sure you use a gentle exfoliator and avoid applying it near the eye region.
Tone: The right toner can give your skin a healthy dose of what it needs to look like you’re glowing, younger, and smoother, right after cleansing and throughout the day.
Toner’s function to close pores, remove any remaining traces of dirt and oil, and re-balance your skin’s pH levels after cleansing. Choose a gentle toning lotion containing natural botanical cleansing agents rather than one with harsh chemicals and apply with a cotton pad to your face, neck, and décolletage.
Moisturise: Whether it’s dry, oily, or sensitive, your skin needs to be replenished each night after a day of exposure to the environment and wearing make-up. A hydrated face is key to improving the texture on your face and preventing premature lines and brown spots. Always apply a moisturizer that suits your skin type on damp skin in circular motions so it is easily absorbed.
